Kingdom Boxing Club’s Junior 2008 65kg boxer Faris Tanahill has been crowned Boxing Scotland Eastern District Open Class champion, writes George Forrester.

Tanahill was fighting against Broxburn Boxing Club’s Cameron Howard at the Area Championships in The Civic Centre, Tullibody.

The build-up to the fight was unusual as Howard weighed in 0.8kg over the 65kg weight limit, meaning that even if the Broxburn scrapper had ‘beaten’ Tanahill, he would not have received the title.

However, Kirkcaldy club fighter Tanahill didn’t let this distraction affect his performance and defeated the heavier opponent by a unanimous decision, winning on all five judges’ scorecards.

Both boxers will face each other again this weekend in the final of the Boxing Scotland National Development Championships at Ravenscraig Sports Facility in Motherwell.

A member of Tanahill’s camp told the Fife Free Press that they fully expect Howard to ‘make the weight’ on this occasion as they reckon that he’ll be desperate to try and avenge last weekend’s loss.

Another Kingdom Boxing Club star who is also fighting this weekend at the National Championships is elite light middleweight ace Daryl Gray, who is entered in one of the hardest fought categories.

Gray will have to win on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to make it to the final at a later date. But the Kirkcaldy boxer is unlikely to be phased by this challenge as he has prepared thoroughly and has also been training on the Boxing Scotland Performance Pathway Programme.
