Leven fire: path opened on High Street after fire destroyed Poundstretcher

A pedestrian walkway has been opened up in Leven High Street as the town centre continues to return to normal operations after a devastating fire destroyed a major store.

Around 60 firefighters raced to the scene when Poundstretcher on the High Street went up in flames in the early hours of Tuesday, November 8.

The impact of the blaze caused significant disruption to neighbouring retailers.

Fife Council’s latest update, issued today, said High Street shops and services are largely back in business and open to the public as normal.

A pedestrian walkway has also opened on the High Street.

People can now walk down the street using the access ramp and steps outside the TSB Bank. Access for wheelchairs and pushchairs is via Bank Street and down the lane at the side of the Windsor Bar.

Due to the complexity of the situation, work is ongoing to assess the buildings affected by the fire.

Police have appealed to anyone with information on the fire – which also impacted on several adjacent businesses – to come forward.

Detective Inspector Karen Muirhead said: “Poundstetchers and other local businesses have been significantly affected by this fire and our enquiries are ongoing to establish how the fire started.

"We would be keen to speak with anyone who was in the area between 11pm and 2am as they may have witnessed something which may assist the enquiry. I am also appealing to anyone who has any information which may assist us to get in touch.”
